Profile: Located in Bethesda, Wesley Nursery School (WNS) was established in 1961 as a community outreach program. WNS offers half-day programs for 2- through 5-year-olds. As a non-denominational preschool, all are welcome. Our staff strives to promote a loving environment encompassing trust, character development, and the value of diversity.

WNS promotes the emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and physical development of each child by using a play-based age-appropriate curriculum that is loosely structured. A caring environment is provided by the teachers through guidance and love given throughout their daily schedule of activities and by the family members who are encouraged to participate in school celebrations and activities. WNS offers an opportunity for each child to develop as an individual and as a member of a larger community.

Child-initiated play is greatly encouraged at WNS. Supported by Piaget’s premise that children learn best from activities that they plan and carry out themselves, children are allowed and encouraged to make decisions and solve problems on their own in the classrooms. We focus on independent activities and processes and believe children learn best by experiencing their world through direct, hands-on activities.
