Crossway Community Montessori School aims to cultivate every child’s own natural desire to learn; we aim to cultivate curious, compassionate, self-directed, socially responsible citizens who work collaboratively, respectfully, and peacefully as interdependent learners in a diverse intergenerational community. Grounded in Maria Montessori’s theory of human development, each Montessori classroom supports each child’s development according to his/her readiness. Each child is free to explore within a specially prepared environment and with the guidance of the Montessori-trained teachers or “guides”. Designed to be beautiful, orderly, and calm, each classroom is a community of peaceful, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate activity.
Mixed age classes provide a real-world experience for the developing child, as peers learn from one another and work together to maintain their community. Within an environment that intentionally balances freedom and responsibility, children learn to recognize the needs of others while also developing life-long skills of persistence, critical thinking, and independence.

Washington Waldorf School – Imagine a Better Way to Learn.

In Waldorf early childhood programming, children meet themselves in the realm of the imagination through stories, songs, puppetry, and play. They meet the world through tasks like baking, sewing, hammering, sweeping, cooking, sawing, and gardening. These activities nourish and protect a sense of awe and wonder while offering the children a way to rehearse for life as a productive adult. An abundance of outdoor play and practical activity connects children to the rhythms of the year, strengthens their affinity with the natural world, and encourages a life-long love and respect for nature. The beautiful language of our puppet plays, songs, and stories told by heart, begin the foundation for a love of language that is at the heart of true literacy. Creative imaginative play, organized and directed by the children themselves, builds strong social skills and executive functioning which is vital to future academic success. Active play supports the developments a healthy physical body and builds capacities and confidence through movement.

At Gates of Discovery; The Rose and George Teller Preschool of Shaare Tefila, we believe that meaningful learning happens in a place where cognition meets the imagination, emotion, creativity, and aesthetics. Children interact with their world in an unswerving way, and their encounters are characterized by dialogues, critique, comparison, negotiating, hypothesizing, and problem-solving.

As we believe that in any learning moment both the teachers and the children are researchers, and each of them is a learner and a teacher, we start our learning with the adults posing and debating different research possibilities. When we have explored possible venues, we offer our children varied learning opportunities. With any invitation, teachers observe and listen to their students. They ask questions and record the children’s theories and hypotheses. Together, sharing ideas and information, we explore the topic at hand.

The Rock Creek Montessori School is a five day per week program. The main goal of the program is to help children develop a rapport with their environment and to support them as they develop physical, social and intellectual independence. The teacher follows each child’s progress and presents carefully designed lessons and materials on a one-to-one basis as the child is ready.

We focus on Language, Spanish, Mathematics, Practical Life, Sensorial, Science, Social Studies, Music, and Art.

The goal of the school is to enable children to follow their greatest interest while learning about the world immediately around them. The classrooms will allow children to be discoverers in the learning process. Each activity is designed to teach a specific concept. The teacher will present materials and allow each child to proceed at their own pace.

As a fundamental part of Montessori theory, the classrooms include multi-age children. This allows them to learn from and share with each other. The younger ones develop confidence with new skills while observing the more challenging activities of their classmates. The older children gain self-confidence by serving as role models and leaders.

Garrett Park Nursery School (GPNS), founded in 1953, is located next to the Garrett Park Elementary School. We believe that every child is unique and should be allowed to develop at his or her own pace in a warm, encouraging and stimulating atmosphere. We believe that children learn through play, and we want each child’s earliest school experience to be positive and successful. Our program strives to encourage each child to develop a strong, positive self-image and skills for successful interaction with other children and adults. In a cooperative nursery school, the child benefits from a more gradual separation from home and from the opportunity to interact closely with a variety of interested adults with different skills, talents and enthusiasms. Parents benefit from the opportunity to work under a teacher trained in early childhood education and to observe the ways in which other adults interact with young children in various situations. The classrooms are spacious and well equipped with materials to encourage the spontaneity and creativity of each child. Classrooms include: sand and water tables, easels and art supplies, housekeeping and dress-up areas, reading corner, science center, and a loft play area.  We also have a shady, fenced outdoor playground.

Founded in 1942, Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School (The Cooperative School), is a nursery school for children ages 2-5. At The Cooperative School, informed, committed parents work, or “co-op” in their child’s classroom alongside professionally trained, dedicated teachers. Our community is strengthened through monthly membership meetings and periodic training sessions, and parents assume administrative roles essential to the school’s operation.

The Cooperative School presents a distinctive, research-supported early childhood curriculum. Teachers and co-oping parents draw out children’s unique interests while supporting exploration and learning through visual arts, music, movement, and dramatic play. Our environment is integral to our educational philosophy. There are 4 Spaces for Learning: Classroom, Project Center, Imagination Station, and Outdoor Play Space. Arts-based, play-based, and nature-infused activities presented in the different spaces support literacy and language development, fine and gross motor development, as well as learning in the sciences, math, and social studies. More importantly, the environment and exploration afforded by each space support the children’s social and emotional development. Through the careful planning of the environment and the materials offered, the school closely mirrors the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood education and its stance of environment serving as The Third Teacher.

Spring Bilingual Montessori Academy seeks to create a learning environment in which the student is encouraged to explore his own innate sense of curiosity and eagerness to gain knowledge.

Our program is carefully designed to meet the individual needs of each child.  The difference between our environment and that of other Montessori institutions lies in the parallel instruction of foreign language to all facets of the learning process. We believe that children learn best when they learn with others who are both similar and different from themselves.  It is with great pride, that we note that both our student population and our staff are diverse racially, socio-economically and geographically.

The advantages of this added understanding go beyond the simple acquisition of a second vocabulary.  SBMA believes that to know something of the spoken and written language of another group of people is akin to being acquainted with them.  Language enables us to penetrate into another culture’s philosophy, folklore, literature and music.  Through this understanding, we can begin to bridge the unnatural barriers separating the world today. We wish to give our children the inspiration to create a better world tomorrow.

Feynman School is built on the principles of accelerated, differentiated education without a ceiling for gifted students along with strong social-emotional support for the unique needs of gifted children. All students in our school are gifted. We don’t offer gifted education as an enrichment or separate track from a separate curriculum; all we do is gifted education. Your children will learn alongside the peers that they naturally gravitate toward already in public school, and from teachers who have all been trained in gifted education, academic and social-emotional. All our educators attend professional development classes and conferences yearly. We will ensure your gifted learners meet their potential by providing the educational environment they deserve.

Feynman School believes gifted education starts early. Because we believe all gifted children deserve an education commensurate with their abilities, we take advanced learners starting at preschool and prepare them for success while cultivating a love of learning and school.

Give your children the gift of an education that matches their intellect and call us today.

Kensington Nursery School was the first cooperative nursery school in the Washington metropolitan area and was founded in 1939.

Kensington Nursery School is dedicated to providing a nurturing and enriching environment for preschool children and their families. Play is the major activity through which children develop social skills, work out difficulties and exercise their physical, sensory, emotional and cognitive abilities. We accept each child as a person, encouraging individual strengths and fostering a positive self-image.

Daily experiences are structured to broaden the child’s understanding of the world. The wide variety of materials is used selectively to give children many opportunities for exploration. The atmosphere of the classroom encourages freedom of expression, while respecting the rights and feelings of others. Specially-trained teachers guide a thematically based program and work with cooperating parents to ensure that each child is attended to as part of a group and as an individual. Children are able to expand their appreciation of their community, the environment and the natural world.

Parent perspective is broadened through participation in the classroom and the Parent Education Program. Skills and insights learned at school can be used at home. Children value parents’ participation and they begin to learn the meaning of community involvement.

SSDS allows each child the opportunity to explore the world around them, build meaningful friendships, and make discoveries about themselves. What does it look like when a school built to provide an excellent education to children from across Greater Washington lives its mission? And when that school cultivates each individual child’s capacity to feel, to wonder, to create, and to relate to others with empathy and kindness? The answer is Grace.

Our Early Childhood program weaves expertise in how children learn into our pedagogy from Preschool through Grade 1, protecting childhood and nurturing the curiosity that is the seed and spark of a lifelong love of learning. The hallmark of Early Childhood education at Grace, emergent curriculum grows units of learning from ideas that “emerge” from the students themselves. Emergent curriculum uses principles of play-based learning – imagining, pretending, observing, wondering, questioning – to build on children’s curiosity. With the facilitation of highly trained teachers, one child’s observation can lead to another’s question and grow into a unit on a topic such as space travel or robotics. In these units, students as young as three draw, tinker, build, research, sing, share, and dramatize.

Our goal at the Audubon Nature Preschool is to facilitate the development of academic, social and physical skills through interactions with the natural world. Children are born naturalists. They explore the world with all of their senses, experiment in the environment, and communicate their discoveries to those around them. The Audubon Nature Preschool builds on children’s inherent curiosity about the world by using hands-on, nature-based activities to foster social, physical, and academic skill development. Children unravel the wonders of the natural world through a balance of self- and teacher-directed activities. Each day follows a familiar rhythm of outdoor investigations and explorations, indoor play, circle time snack and story. On our 40-acre nature sanctuary, children explore ecologically diverse aquatic, forest, and meadow habitats. Watching birds from our bird blind, looking under logs for creepy-crawlies, and using nets to explore the pond enrich a curriculum that integrates science, math, literacy, and the arts. Cooperative learning and social competence are developed through group and individual activities. We offer traditional drop-off programs as well as parent-child programs. At Sandy Spring Friends School, we believe students learn best when creative thinking, active listening, and positive interactions are reinforced in the classroom. Through close collaboration between teachers and peers, students develop a deep love of learning. Our students learn to shape questions about concepts and ideas, reflect upon their learning, and put their learning into action – developing initiative and self-advocacy skills in the process.

“We seek daily to create an environment in which children can follow their curiosity into experimentation and engagement, applying their energy to full participation in collaborative learning, hands-on activities, and opportunities for academic enrichment.”

– Brenda Crawley, Head of the Lower School

GISW preschool is in a wonderful, child-friendly building where work is done by hand, through imagination, and while having fun. Activities are designed to stimulate the senses and promote fine & gross motor skills. Our goal is to help children become strong, competent, and self-confident. We follow a German preschool curriculum model which includes 4 major experience areas:

1. Personal skills – I am myself.  Children develop confidence in their physical and mental abilities and learn to estimate them appropriately, take responsibility and act responsibly.

2. Method skills – This is the way I do it.  Children develop learning strategies and techniques for themselves and implement these to complete the task at hand in a suitable manner, developing both creativity and imagination.

3. Social skills – Together we are strong. Children develop trusting relationships with other children and teachers. They learn to cooperate, live together, and take on responsibility. In conflicts, they learn to accept one another’s opinion and work together to develop problem solving strategies in a peaceful manner.

4. Specific skills – Show me something. Activities stimulate curiosity through playing and sharing experiences Children are allowed space and time to discover and develop their own manner of expression.

Whole Kids Academy is Bethesda’s premier Spanish immersion preschool dedicated to providing the highest quality of care, education and enrichment to children from birth to Pre-Kindergarten. We are a family-owned preschool and as parents of two young boys, we sought to build a well-balanced program which we would be excited for own children to be a part of. We have created a warm, cheerful and safe environment with highly qualified teachers to engage our children in fun, age-appropriate learning activities and creative play. We believe in nourishing children’s young bodies with nutritious organic food, lots of sunshine, activity and exercise. We also believe there is a special window of opportunity to reach young children through music, language and technology, which is why they have each earned a prominent place in our everyday curriculum. Above all, our goal is to provide the perfect balance of education and fun through creative play and interactive projects to instill a lifelong love of learning in each child that walks through our doors.
