Crossway Community Montessori School aims to cultivate every child’s own natural desire to learn; we aim to cultivate curious, compassionate, self-directed, socially responsible citizens who work collaboratively, respectfully, and peacefully as interdependent learners in a diverse intergenerational community. Grounded in Maria Montessori’s theory of human development, each Montessori classroom supports each child’s development according to his/her readiness. Each child is free to explore within a specially prepared environment and with the guidance of the Montessori-trained teachers or “guides”. Designed to be beautiful, orderly, and calm, each classroom is a community of peaceful, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate activity.
Mixed age classes provide a real-world experience for the developing child, as peers learn from one another and work together to maintain their community. Within an environment that intentionally balances freedom and responsibility, children learn to recognize the needs of others while also developing life-long skills of persistence, critical thinking, and independence.

Washington Waldorf School – Imagine a Better Way to Learn.

In Waldorf early childhood programming, children meet themselves in the realm of the imagination through stories, songs, puppetry, and play. They meet the world through tasks like baking, sewing, hammering, sweeping, cooking, sawing, and gardening. These activities nourish and protect a sense of awe and wonder while offering the children a way to rehearse for life as a productive adult. An abundance of outdoor play and practical activity connects children to the rhythms of the year, strengthens their affinity with the natural world, and encourages a life-long love and respect for nature. The beautiful language of our puppet plays, songs, and stories told by heart, begin the foundation for a love of language that is at the heart of true literacy. Creative imaginative play, organized and directed by the children themselves, builds strong social skills and executive functioning which is vital to future academic success. Active play supports the developments a healthy physical body and builds capacities and confidence through movement.

We strive to provide each child with a secure, caring and stimulating experience. Our powerful belief in the competence of all children nourishes our practice.

Children are born with a drive to order the world around them; however, they do not do this in isolation. They need supportive adults, collaborative peers and a stimulating environment to make sense of their experiences. Teachers provide opportunities for children to construct knowledge through a process of discovery in which children and adults become partners in learning.

Teachers organize environments that provoke exploration, experimentation and problem solving. Extended explorations are often carried out in small groups, where cooperation and disputation mingle pleasurably. Documentation of children’s work is displayed throughout the space.

Our school takes pride in its identity as a Jewish preschool. A foundation of that identity is recognizing the value of the diversity within our community. We believe that children’s learning is given roots by placing it in the context of our shared history. The customs and traditions we observe add a framework of values that guide our interactions among ourselves and with the greater community. Our practices link our faith to everyday living; our values are the fabric of our school’s culture.

Holy Redeemer “Pre-K” programs are a unique learning community where our youngest students come to enjoy their first experience in school and we want them to LOVE it!

We understand young children learn best through hands-on activities, rich interpersonal relationships, and play.  Our exceptional teachers focus on developmentally appropriate self-help, language arts, and math skills.  There is a rich tradition of art projects and other creative experiences.  Students are encouraged to take appropriate risks as they learn and grow. All  Pre-K 3 year old classes participate in co-curricular programs including Music, Physical Education, time in the Library and more.

The social curriculum is as important as academics.  By incorporating Holy Redeemer’s 4C’s: Courtesy, Compassion, Community and Commitment, into the daily life of the classrooms, children develop the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible learners and kind friends. Rock Creek Montessori School follows the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. It recognizes the child’s need to learn academic skills, observe the environment, do independent work and cooperate in a community.

The goal of the school is to enable children to follow their greatest interest while learning about the world immediately around them. The classrooms will allow children to be discoverers in the learning process. Each activity is designed to teach a specific concept. The teacher will present materials and allow each child to proceed at their own pace.

As a fundamental part of Montessori theory, the classrooms include multi-age children. This allows them to learn from and share with each other. The younger ones develop confidence with new skills while observing the more challenging activities of their classmates. The older children gain self-confidence by serving as role models and leaders.

The Montessori classroom is:

Purposefully prepared environment
Learner centered
Developmentally appropriate
Equipped with self-correcting materials meant to engage young learners

We encourage children to:

Explore and discover
Work independently at their own pace
Develop a sense of mastery and accomplishment

Founded in 1942, Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School (The Cooperative School), is a nursery school for children ages 2-5. At The Cooperative School, informed, committed parents work, or “co-op” in their child’s classroom alongside professionally trained, dedicated teachers. Our community is strengthened through monthly membership meetings and periodic training sessions, and parents assume administrative roles essential to the school’s operation.

The Cooperative School presents a distinctive, research-supported early childhood curriculum. Teachers and co-oping parents draw out children’s unique interests while supporting exploration and learning through visual arts, music, movement, and dramatic play. Our environment is integral to our educational philosophy. There are 4 Spaces for Learning: Classroom, Project Center, Imagination Station, and Outdoor Play Space. Arts-based, play-based, and nature-infused activities presented in the different spaces support literacy and language development, fine and gross motor development, as well as learning in the sciences, math, and social studies. More importantly, the environment and exploration afforded by each space support the children’s social and emotional development. Through the careful planning of the environment and the materials offered, the school closely mirrors the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood education and its stance of environment serving as The Third Teacher.

Spring Bilingual Montessori Academy (SBMA) seeks to create a learning environment in which the student is encouraged to explore his own innate sense of curiosity and eagerness to gain knowledge. Our program is carefully designed to meet the individual needs of each child. The difference between the SBMA environment and that of other Montessori institutions lies in the parallel instruction of foreign language to all facets of the learning process. Our convenient daily schedules are tailored for working parents: we open as early as 7:30 am, and are open until 6 pm, with year-round program options. Our shorter half-day programs for toddlers and preschoolers are a great option for combining a high-quality school experience with time at home. The advantages of this added understanding go beyond the simple acquisition of a second vocabulary. SBMA believes that to know something of the spoken and written language of another group of people is akin to being acquainted with them. Language enables us to penetrate into another culture’s philosophy, folklore, literature and music.

Kensington Nursery School was the first cooperative nursery school in the Washington metropolitan area and was founded in 1939.

Kensington Nursery School is dedicated to providing a nurturing and enriching environment for preschool children and their families. Play is the major activity through which children develop social skills, work out difficulties and exercise their physical, sensory, emotional and cognitive abilities. We accept each child as a person, encouraging individual strengths and fostering a positive self-image.

Daily experiences are structured to broaden the child’s understanding of the world. The wide variety of materials is used selectively to give children many opportunities for exploration. The atmosphere of the classroom encourages freedom of expression, while respecting the rights and feelings of others. Specially-trained teachers guide a thematically based program and work with cooperating parents to ensure that each child is attended to as part of a group and as an individual. Children are able to expand their appreciation of their community, the environment and the natural world.

Parent perspective is broadened through participation in the classroom and the Parent Education Program. Skills and insights learned at school can be used at home. Children value parents’ participation and they begin to learn the meaning of community involvement.

What does it look like when a school built to provide an excellent education to children from across Greater Washington lives its mission? And when that school cultivates each individual child’s capacity to feel, to wonder, to create, and to relate to others with empathy and kindness? The answer is Grace.

Our Early Childhood program weaves expertise in how children learn into our pedagogy from Preschool through Grade 1, protecting childhood and nurturing the curiosity that is the seed and spark of a lifelong love of learning. The hallmark of Early Childhood education at Grace, emergent curriculum grows units of learning from ideas that “emerge” from the students themselves. Emergent curriculum uses principles of play-based learning – imagining, pretending, observing, wondering, questioning – to build on children’s curiosity. With the facilitation of highly trained teachers, one child’s observation can lead to another’s question and grow into a unit on a topic such as space travel or robotics. In these units, students as young as three draw, tinker, build, research, sing, share, and dramatize. This way of teaching and learning builds a culture of inquiry and academic engagement that benefits Grace students through Grade 5 and beyond.

New for fall 2018, Grace is replacing our financial aid program with a Variable Tuition Program. Rather than offer financial aid packages to families, we will offer a range of tuitions. Our ideal is that each family’s tuition — a figure that represents the portion of the full cost of a Grace education that a family is required to pay — be in line with what that family can afford to contribute. Our school’s outstanding teachers and staff provide a nurturing, safe, and fun-filled environment that fosters creativity and a love of learning through play and exploration. We value each child’s unique needs and contributions, as we foster social, emotional, physical, and thinking skills that children will need and use throughout their lives. Our TCS family is committed to celebrating and reflecting the diversity of our community. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, believing children to be capable and competent. Through teacher observation and research, we follow the children’s interests as a guide to choosing the investigations and projects in the classroom.

The German International School Washington is a private, co-educational institution with more than 500 students from over 20 countries in preschool through 12th grade, set on a quiet campus in Potomac, Md. In our preschool, children aged 2 to 4 enjoy play-based learning with plenty of time outdoors. Teachers are native German speakers and speak German exclusively with the children. However, preschoolers do not need to have prior knowledge of German before enrolling. Preschool instruction is intimate, with a teacher-to-student ratio of one to six for two-year-olds and one to 10 for three- and four-year-olds. The daily routine is structured yet flexible. With teachers as their guides, children are encouraged to pursue activities of their choice and manage their own time. This fosters their self-discipline and confidence. We offer half-day and full-day enrollment options.
