Rock Creek Montessori School follows the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. It recognizes the child’s need to learn academic skills, observe the environment, do independent work and cooperate in a community.

The goal of the school is to enable children to follow their greatest interest while learning about the world immediately around them. The classrooms will allow children to be discoverers in the learning process. Each activity is designed to teach a specific concept. The teacher will present materials and allow each child to proceed at their own pace.

As a fundamental part of Montessori theory, the classrooms include multi-age children. This allows them to learn from and share with each other. The younger ones develop confidence with new skills while observing the more challenging activities of their classmates. The older children gain self-confidence by serving as role models and leaders.

The Montessori classroom is:

Learner centered

Founded in 1942, Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School (The Cooperative School), is a nursery school for children ages 2-5. At The Cooperative School, informed, committed parents work, or “co-op” in their child’s classroom alongside professionally trained, dedicated teachers. Our community is strengthened through monthly membership meetings and periodic training sessions, and parents assume administrative roles essential to the school’s operation.

The Cooperative School presents a distinctive, research-supported early childhood curriculum. Teachers and co-oping parents draw out children’s unique interests while supporting exploration and learning through visual arts, music, movement, and dramatic play. Our environment is integral to our educational philosophy. There are 4 Spaces for Learning: Classroom, Project Center, Imagination Station, and Outdoor Play Space. Arts-based, play-based, and nature-infused activities presented in the different spaces support literacy and language development, fine and gross motor development, as well as learning in the sciences, math, and social studies. More importantly, the environment and exploration afforded by each space support the children’s social and emotional development. Through the careful planning of the environment and the materials offered, the school closely mirrors the Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood education and its stance of environment serving as The Third Teacher.

  • Secular curriculum

Our programs provide a balance between play and enrichment activities, encouraging independence, natural talents and learning about the world through the gift of imitation, fantasy, and invention. We recognize the significance of experiences in early childhood for an individual’s later development, and we use age-appropriate approaches for teaching. Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of socio-dramatic play have greater language skills, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination, and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean.

In our classes, through festivals, gardening and craft activities, we bring a sense of wonder and reverence for nature. Through cooperative and careful work indoors and outdoors we encourage respect for both the environment and one another.

Concentration, small muscle development and hand-eye coordination are all essential to reading and writing. Activities that promote these skills include baking, crafts and painting.

A further contribution to language development is our practice of storytelling and puppetry. In this way the child’s memory is developed along with a sense for the beauty and expressiveness of language.

Daily circle time features poems, games and songs that further build language skills and also provide the basis for mathematics skills through counting games and rhymes.

A cooperative nursery school offers you the opportunity to learn and grow with your child, to share experiences with other parents, and to become a participant in your child’s education by assisting in the day-to-day operations of the school and in the classroom. RPCNS offers a sibling nursery for families with younger children to allow them to participate fully in the cooperative classroom.  Extended day options, such as Yoga or Soccer, are also available for additional fees.

Spring Bilingual Montessori Academy (SBMA) seeks to create a learning environment in which the student is encouraged to explore his own innate sense of curiosity and eagerness to gain knowledge. Our program is carefully designed to meet the individual needs of each child.

The difference between the SBMA environment and that of other Montessori institutions lies in the parallel instruction of foreign language to all facets of the learning process.

The goal of the teacher in this process is to prepare a structured environment in which the child has access to information and activities which promote positive learning. At SBMA, learning the language of another culture is as natural as are the stimuli used to write, to count, to associate names with places and animals, and to develop sensory awareness and practical life skills.

The advantages of this added understanding go beyond the simple acquisition of a second vocabulary. SBMA believes that to know something of the spoken and written language of another group of people is akin to being acquainted with them. Language enables us to penetrate into another culture’s philosophy, folklore, literature and music.

Young children learn by manipulating, questioning, creating, observing, exploring, experimenting, interacting, and by using their senses. We provide both formal and informal experiences throughout each day that promotes this type of learning. As a Jewish school, important components of our program include celebrating Shabbat and holidays, teaching Jewish values and customs, and a love for Israel. Feynman School celebrates the wonder of learning. We help exceptional young minds grow into tomorrow’s outstanding leaders, thinkers and creators. Our well-founded approach brings together the three elements at the heart of that transformation:

Discovery – We use science as a tool of exploration and explanation. To us, science isn’t a class in school; it’s a way to see the world and the core of a curriculum that runs the gamut from math and language to art and music.

Diversity -We introduce bilingual education to open the gates of global experience. Here, bilingualism means more than learning another language. It means appreciating another culture and preparing for life in the worldwide community. Coeducational and nonsectarian, Feynman School seeks to identify, admit and enroll the most promising young learners regardless of ethnicity, race, religion or socioeconomic background.

Development – We understand that gifted children are children. Along with the thrill of a challenge, they need the nurturing and guidance to develop the self-awareness, self-confidence, curiosity, creativity and caring to make the most of their natural gifts.

At Feynman, we educate the whole child. All our students have a chance to find their voice, discover their passions and revel in learning and exploration.

  • Secular curriculum

Takoma Children’s School is a play-based program nestled in Takoma Park and is very much a part of the Takoma Park community. We are inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, believing that our children come to us as capable, confident learners.   As teachers, we seek to be co-creators of knowledge as we work together with children to investigate topics of interest to the whole class or a subset of children. Based on this spirit of inquiry, no year is the same as the one that came before, since the various projects the class investigates throughout any year is driven by the children. Language, pre-literacy, social/emotional learning, the basics of mathematics and science inquiry are all embedded in the children’s daily experiences as they learn through play.   We have a large playground and all classrooms are outside twice/day. With three classrooms and about 50 children enrolled, we are “just the right size.”   Our lead teachers all have at least a B.A.; many of our teachers do, too. Our teachers focus on developing strong relationships with the children in their classroom as well as providing educational experiences.   Come visit us, we are pretty special!

Applications due February 28, decisions made in mid-March for school year starting in Fall 2017.

Our goal at the Audubon Nature Preschool is to facilitate the development of academic, social and physical skills through interactions with the natural world. Children are born naturalists. They explore the world with all of their senses, experiment in the environment, and communicate their discoveries to those around them. The Audubon Nature Preschool builds on children’s inherent curiosity about the world by using hands-on, nature-based activities to foster social, physical, and academic skill development. Children unravel the wonders of the natural world through a balance of self- and teacher-directed activities. Each day follows a familiar rhythm of outdoor investigations and explorations, indoor play, circle time snack and story. On our 40-acre nature sanctuary, children explore ecologically diverse aquatic, forest, and meadow habitats. Watching birds from our bird blind, looking under logs for creepy-crawlies, and using nets to explore the pond enrich a curriculum that integrates science, math, literacy, and the arts. Cooperative learning and social competence are developed through group and individual activities. We offer traditional drop-off programs as well as parent-child programs. There are programs for children aged 6 and younger.

Parent-child programs:
